Chris and Dale became involved in Geocaching in July 2001. This is an activity that mixes hiking, exploring and GPS (Global Positioning System) devices. People all over the world hide caches, then post the GPS coordinates on the Geocaching web site. The object is to find the cache, sign the log book in the cache, and, optionally, exchange something of ours for an item or two in the cache. Typical caches have little of real value in them. The ones we have seen have had small stuffed toys like the ones you get at fast food restaurants, playing cards, key rings, small currency, CD's, PlayStation games, and such. As of October 18, 2004, there are 1,229 registered caches (including three of ours) within 20 miles of our house. We have found 182 caches in 7 states and 2 foreign countries. We have hidden eight. We've "released" 33 travel bugs into caches. Our geocaching "handle" is Mengarelliott. See how our Punta-Gorda-bound travel bugs fared.
